Video 3: The Benefits of Routines: How Routines Can Improve Number Sense, Reasoning, and Develop Math Fluency
Week 3 Video: In the previous video we talked about the features of math routines and in this one we are going to look at the benefits. Routines should NOT be something students are doing mindlessly (like routines can be in our lives), students should be actively engaged and building some really powerful mathematical ideas. Watch this video as Christina explains 2 benefits you want to be seeking out so that the routines can help your students build their number sense, reasoning abilities, and develop their math fluency.

Reading Prompt
In what ways do you feel you could improve in doing routines so that you get the most benefits for your students by doing them?
If you want to interact with others participating in the book study for this week's reading prompt there are two spots.
Log into the Build Math Minds PD site if you are a member to respond to this week's reading prompt.

If you are not a member, we have a Guide in the free Facebook group for the book study and you can respond in there.
These videos will be accessible on these pages through 5pm Pacific Time on August 25, 2024. After that, they will only be accessible inside the Build Math Minds PD site for our members.
Your Math Routines Journey Starts Here
5 weeks to learn how to Jump Start Math Class with Routines
1: What NOT to do For The First Few Minutes of Class and How You Can Have Better Student Engagement
Don't worry...we've done it too
We’ve all done these, so don’t feel like you are the only one! This week we are calling out the ways we’ve started math class in the past. But it’s time to leave them in the past and find ways to move forward in more productive ways with your students. Before we can move forward we need to address the things we’ve done in the past that don’t work.
2: What is a Routine? Key Features of Routines
Instead, do this
Math Routines are a great way to build community while helping your students build their math minds. In this video, Rosalba will discuss what makes something a routine and key features you should be incorporating to get your math time started off right.
3: The Power of Routines: How Routines Improve Number Sense, Reasoning, and Develop Math Fluency
Because of these reasons
In the previous video we talked about the features of math routines and in this one we are going to look at the benefits. Routines shouldn’t be something students are doing mindlessly (like routines can be in our lives), students should be actively engaged and building some really powerful mathematical ideas. Watch this video as Christina explains how routines can help your students build their number sense, reasoning abilities, and develop their math fluency.
4: How to Plan for & Implement Math Routines You Will Actually Do When School Starts
Here's how to make it work
We are 4 weeks into this book study and Math Routines sounds AMAAAAZING, but figuring out how to actually make it work in your classroom that part doesn’t sound so amazing. We can’t tell you exactly how to do it, because one of the main benefits of using routines is that they are responsive and you modify what you are doing during the routines to meet the needs of your current classroom of kids. This video will give you some ideas and things to think about as you spend time this week really planning out how you will implement math routines.
5: Modifying & Designing Your Own Routines to Meet the Needs of YOUR Students
Using the stuff you already have
Designing your own routines is wonderful, if you have time to start from scratch. Most of the time you will likely be taking a routine that is already made and modifying it to meet the needs of your students. In our final week of the book study let’s take a look at tips for designing and modifying math routines.
After the book study is over, all these videos will only be accessible inside the Build Math Minds PD site. A membership to the BMM PD site gives you access to quality professional development and resources to help you build the math minds of your student. You can access the site from your phone or computer any time that works best for you.
