Were you recently waitlisted to New York University? If so, you might be wondering if you should cut bait or if you have a genuine shot of earning admission to the Greenwich Village, Manhattan-based institution. So now’s the time to find out!
New York University Waitlist Acceptance Rates and Statistics
NYU has not published the school’s waitlist admissions statistics for most years. Instead, the university — which does indeed keep a waitlist for its incoming class — leaves out these figures from its reporting to The Common Data Set, an unusual move among America’s highly selective universities.
That said, below are the admissions figures the school has published for the NYU Class of 2027 through the NYU Class of 2014:
New York University Class Year | Number of Students Waitlisted to NYU | Number of Students Who Chose to Join NYU Waitlist | Number of Students Accepted Off NYU Waitlist | NYU Waitlist Acceptance Rate |

Your Chances of Admission to NYU After Being Waitlisted
NYU hasn’t published waitlist admissions statistics in ten years — since the Class of 2017.
We’re not certain why NYU’s Office of Institutional Research ceased sharing these figures, especially when NYU’s peer institutions aren’t typically cagey with their numbers. And we call on NYU’s Office of Institutional Research to release these figures for the Class of 2027 and thereafter.
Yet from the waitlist admissions statistics NYUhasshared — for the Classes of 2016 through 2014 (only the total number of applicants waitlisted were released for the Class of 2017) — the school’s waitlist admission rate has ranged from a low of 7.87% to a high of 52.36%. Over these three admissions cycles, an average of 320 students earned admission off the waitlist.
Your Chances of Admission to NYU After Being Waitlisted with Ivy Coach’s Help
While NYU has been cryptic with its waitlist admissions statistics in recent years, we keep the data of students who first come to Ivy Coach after being waitlisted.
Over the last 30 years, 46% of students who first come to Ivy Coach after being waitlisted have earned admission with our assistance. In the previous ten years, 47% of students who first come to Ivy Coach after being waitlisted have secured spots in the incoming NYU class.
So what’s Ivy Coach’s secret sauce for waitlisted students to NYU? It’s a two-step recipe that goes as follows:
- Complete Ivy Coach’s PostMortem application review. We need to see how an applicant to NYU presented themselves. After all, how they present themselves after being waitlisted can’t be out of left field. It needs to be consistent with the narrative previously presented — just relayed in a much more compelling way.
- Submit a powerful Letter of Continued Interest to NYU. Many students know they should send a letter to NYU after being waitlisted if they hope to get in. But an ordinary letter doesn’t suffice. A letter with updates and brags on all a student has achieved in the few months since they first applied doesn’t suffice. Ivy Coach’s letters contain no peaco*cks or updates. Instead, they are love letters to NYU, featuring specific after specific of how a student will contribute their singular hook to the institution (and, no, name-dropping professors and classes do not count as genuine specifics!).
